The Maroon & Blue Khadi Cotton Saree carries a deep maroon body with a contrasting blue pallu and a blue running blouse attached. Maroon and blue is a traditional South Indian pairing that never quite goes out of rotation โ€” it belongs at temple visits and family functions in equal measure.

Is this saree handloom?

No. It is powerloom-woven, mill-spun cotton in a khadi weave.

We put that near the top rather than bury it. Around 80% of what we sell is made by hand by skilled artisans, and those pieces are labelled that way. This one is khadi-weave cotton woven on a powerloom โ€” which is exactly why it sits at the accessible end of the collection. The breathability, the drape and the comfort are the same. What differs is how it was made, and that is yours to know.

Checking for yourself: handloom fabric carries small irregularities โ€” slightly uneven thread density, a selvedge that isn't perfectly straight, the occasional knot where a weaver joined a thread. Powerloom cloth is machine-even end to end. Neither is a defect.

Fabric and drape

Light, breathable khadi-weave cotton with a gentle surface texture. It pleats cleanly, wears comfortably through long days, and softens with every wash.

Styling maroon and blue

Two deep colours, so the saree carries itself. Restraint everywhere else.

  • The attached blue running blouse is the straightforward pairing โ€” tonal, traditional, no thinking required.
  • For a function, a gold or off-white blouse breaks the two darks apart and brightens the whole drape. A printed or ikat blouse works better than a third plain colour.
  • Temple gold and antique-finish jewellery are the natural fit against maroon. One statement piece is plenty.
  • Deep maroon suits nearly every skin tone, and the blue contrast keeps the drape from reading as too heavy or too dark.

When to wear it

Temple visits ยท Varamahalakshmi and Pongal ยท family functions and weddings as a guest ยท daily and office wear ยท Deepavali, where cotton is a safer choice around lamps than silk.

Care

Hand wash or machine wash in cold to lukewarm water with a mild detergent. No bleach or harsh chemicals. Wash separately for the first few washes โ€” deep maroon and blue both release dye early. Don't wring or twist. Line dry in the shade. Warm iron only. Store dry, wrapped in white cotton cloth. Occasional knots in cotton are natural. Cared for properly, it lasts 7 to 10 years.

Questions buyers ask

Is this a handwoven saree?

No, it's powerloom. Mill-woven khadi-weave cotton rather than handwoven. About 80% of our wider range is artisan-made; this is our accessible everyday option.

How long is it?

6 metres, including an 80 cm running blouse. The width is 1.2 metres.

Does a blouse come with it?

Yes. A blue running blouse in the pallu shade comes attached. It's unstitched, ready for your tailor.

Is maroon suitable for temple wear?

Yes โ€” maroon is one of the most traditional temple colours in South India, and cotton is comfortable enough to sit in for a long morning.

Can I wear this to a wedding as a guest?

Yes. Pair it with a gold or off-white contrast blouse and one substantial gold-toned piece, and it holds its own without competing with the bride.

Is it too dark for daytime?

Not with the blue pallu breaking it up. The contrast is what keeps a deep maroon from reading heavy in daylight.

Will the colours bleed into each other?

Wash it on its own for the first two or three washes. Both maroon and deep blue release a little dye at the start.

Does it shrink?

Slightly, on the first wash. Cold to lukewarm water and drying in the shade keep it minimal.

What if it doesn't suit me?

You have 5 days from receipt to request a return, with an unedited parcel-opening video from start to finish. Exchanges within 3 days, in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by you.
