The Orange & Black Khadi Cotton Saree pairs a warm orange body with a black pallu and a black running blouse attached. Orange is the boldest colour in our khadi range, and the black grounds it โ€” bright enough to be noticed, restrained enough to wear to work.

Handloom or powerloom?

Powerloom. This is mill-spun cotton in a khadi weave, not handwoven.

We put it plainly because the alternative is letting you find out later. Around 80% of our range is handmade by skilled artisans and labelled as such; this saree is not one of those. It is khadi-weave cotton woven on a powerloom, which is exactly why it sits at the accessible end of what we sell. The comfort and drape are identical. The making is what differs.

How to spot the difference: handloom cotton has small irregularities โ€” thread density that varies slightly, a selvedge that isn't quite straight, the occasional knot. Powerloom cloth is machine-even end to end. Neither is a fault.

Fabric and drape

Breathable khadi-weave cotton with a light surface texture. It pleats well, stays cool through a South Indian afternoon, and softens with each wash.

Styling orange and black

The colour is doing all the talking here, so everything else should stay quiet.

  • The attached black running blouse is the anchor โ€” it stops the orange from overwhelming the drape and makes the saree office-appropriate.
  • If you want more warmth, a mustard or deep maroon blouse works. Avoid a second bright colour; orange doesn't share space well.
  • Gold and antique-finish jewellery suit orange far better than silver. One bold piece, nothing fine or delicate.
  • Warm undertones carry orange effortlessly, and it is one of the shades that looks particularly striking on deeper skin.

When to wear it

Festive wear ยท Ugadi and Pongal ยท daytime functions ยท office wear, with the black blouse ยท summer months, when brighter cottons feel right ยท temple visits.

Care

Hand wash or machine wash in cold to lukewarm water with a mild detergent. No bleach or harsh chemicals. Wash separately at first โ€” bright orange releases dye more than most shades early on. Don't wring or twist. Line dry in the shade; direct sun dulls bright colours fastest. Warm iron only. Store dry, wrapped in white cotton cloth. Occasional knots are natural in cotton. Cared for properly, it lasts 7 to 10 years.

Questions buyers ask

Is this saree handloom?

No โ€” powerloom. Mill-woven khadi-weave cotton rather than handwoven. Roughly 80% of our wider range is artisan-made; this is our accessible everyday piece.

How long is it?

6 metres, including an 80 cm running blouse. The width is 1.2 metres.

Does it come with a blouse?

Yes โ€” a black running blouse matching the pallu, attached and unstitched, ready for your tailor.

Is orange too bright for office wear?

Not with the black pallu and blouse holding it down. That contrast is what makes this saree work at a desk as well as at a festival.

Who does orange suit?

It sits naturally on warm undertones and looks especially striking on deeper skin. The black grounding it makes it far more wearable than a solid orange would be.

What jewellery goes with orange?

Gold or antique-finish, not silver. One substantial piece โ€” orange doesn't need much beside it.

Will the orange fade or bleed?

Bright shades release some dye in the first few washes, so wash it separately at first. Dry in the shade โ€” sunlight dulls oranges faster than any wash will.

Does it shrink?

Slightly, on the first wash. Cold to lukewarm water and shade drying keep it minimal.

What if the shade isn't what I expected?

Returns are within 5 days of receipt, with an unedited parcel-opening video. Screen-to-fabric colour variation isn't covered โ€” which is why we'd rather show you the saree on a video call first. Just ask.
