A three-piece unstitched dress material in handloom cotton, hand-batiked in mustard and white. Tone-on-tone buttas are embroidered down the kurta in the same mustard as the cloth. Nothing is cut or sewn. The lengths are yours to take to your tailor and have made exactly the way you want them.

What You Receive

  • Kurta fabric — 2.4 m handloom cotton in mustard, with a white batik vine border running down the front and self-colour machine-embroidered buttas placed along the panel
  • Bottom fabric — 2.4 m cotton in the reverse colourway: white, with mustard batik florals
  • Dupatta — 2.25 m chiffon, batik-printed in mustard and white to match, with a lace edging already attached

Two things we would rather tell you plainly. The buttas are machine embroidery, not hand embroidery. And the dupatta is chiffon, not cotton.

The Craft

Batik is a resist craft. Wax is applied by hand where the colour is meant to stay out, the cloth is dyed, and the wax is removed. Done by hand, the line is never mechanically perfect — you will see small variations in the vine and fine veining where the wax cracked. That is the mark of the hand, not a flaw in the cloth.

The embroidered buttas are worked in mustard thread on mustard cloth. They do not shout. They catch the light as you move, and add a quiet richness to an otherwise easy cotton.

How to Style It

Mustard is warm and sunny, and it carries gold beautifully. Gold-toned or antique jewellery suits it best — small jhumkas are enough. A white or tan jutti picks up the bottom fabric.

A straight kurta with a narrow palazzo or straight pants suits this batik best — the vine is directional and reads well on long, uninterrupted panels. A heavily gathered silhouette breaks it up.

Easy enough for a work day. The embroidery makes it festive enough for a haldi, a puja or a small function.

Care

Hand wash in cold to lukewarm water with a mild detergent. Wash it separately the first two or three times — hand-dyed batik releases a little colour early on, and then it settles. Keep the white bottom apart from darker clothes. No bleach or harsh chemicals. Do not wring or twist. Line dry in the shade, never direct sun. Warm iron only, and iron the embroidery on the reverse side.

The chiffon dupatta wants a gentler hand than the cotton, and a cool iron.

Cotton may shrink slightly on the first wash. Worth mentioning to your tailor before anything is cut. Cared for this way, handloom cotton stays with you for 7 to 10 years.

Questions

Is this stitched or unstitched?
Unstitched. You receive the fabric lengths; your tailor makes it up. The photograph shows the fabric draped on a mannequin so you can see how the print falls.

What exactly do I receive?
Three pieces — 2.4 m mustard kurta fabric, 2.4 m white bottom fabric, and a 2.25 m chiffon dupatta with lace edging attached.

Is the fabric handloom?
The kurta and bottom fabrics are handloom cotton. The dupatta is chiffon.

Is the embroidery done by hand?
No. The buttas are machine embroidery, in mustard thread matching the fabric. The batik is done by hand.

Are the buttas gold?
No. They are self-colour — the same mustard as the kurta fabric, with a slight sheen from the thread.

What is hand batik?
A wax-resist dyeing craft. Wax is applied by hand to block the dye, the cloth is dyed, then the wax is lifted. Each piece carries small irregularities because of it.

How is this different from your mustard yellow hakoba dress material?
That one is hakoba cotton with hand block-printed florals and a cotton dupatta. This one is handloom cotton with hand batik, self-colour embroidered buttas and a chiffon dupatta.

Will the colour run?
A little in the first two or three washes, as hand-dyed cloth does. Wash each piece separately at first and it settles.

Will it shrink?
Cotton may shrink slightly. Allow for it when stitching, and tell your tailor before cutting.

Is 2.4 m enough for the kurta I want?
That depends on the length and sleeve you have in mind, and on your height. Check the 2.4 m against your usual pattern with your tailor before ordering.

Can I see it before I buy?
Yes. Message us on WhatsApp at 7353931190 and we will show you the fabric live on a video call, in daylight, so you can see the true mustard and the embroidery up close.

Do you ship across India?
Yes, to all pin codes. Free shipping on prepaid orders. COD available with a ₹150 handling charge.

How quickly is it dispatched?
Usually within one working day. After that, two to three days to metro cities and five to seven to non-metro.

Can I return or exchange it?
Return within five days of receiving it, with an unedited video of the parcel being opened from start to finish. Exchange within three days, in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged at your end.
