Handloom or powerloom?

Powerloom. This is mill-spun cotton in a khadi weave, not handwoven.

We would rather tell you than let you assume. Roughly 80% of our range is made by hand by skilled artisans, and those pieces say so clearly. This one is khadi-weave cotton on a powerloom, which is why it sits where it does on price. The comfort and drape are identical — only the making differs, and you deserve to know which you're buying.

Telling them apart: handloom cloth has small natural irregularities — thread density that varies, an imperfect selvedge, occasional joining knots. Powerloom cloth is machine-consistent throughout. Neither is a fault.

Fabric and drape

Khadi-weave cotton, breathable and light, with a soft surface texture. It pleats crisply, holds its shape through a long day, and softens with each wash.

Styling maroon and black

Two dark colours together need something to lift them — this is the one saree in the range where the blouse choice really matters.

• The attached black running blouse is the sharp, formal option. It works, but it keeps the whole drape dark.
• Gold, mustard or off-white as a contrast blouse changes the saree completely and stops it reading as heavy — worth doing for any daytime occasion.
• Gold-toned and temple jewellery cut through the darkness better than silver here. One bold piece.
• An all-dark drape can look flat without something to lift it, which is exactly what the contrast blouse and a gold neckpiece are for.

Care

Hand wash or machine wash in cold to lukewarm water with a mild detergent. No bleach or harsh chemicals — bleach is especially unforgiving on black. Wash separately for the first few washes. Don't wring or twist. Line dry in the shade; direct sun dulls black cotton faster than any other colour. Warm iron only. Store dry, wrapped in white cotton cloth. With proper care it lasts 7 to 10 years.

What is the length?

Is the blouse attached and unstitched?

Yes to both. A black running blouse comes attached in the shade of the pallu, unstitched so your tailor can fit it to you.

Isn't maroon with black too dark?

It can be, worn with the attached black blouse alone. A gold, mustard or off-white contrast blouse and one bold gold neckpiece lift it immediately — and that's the styling we'd suggest for anything in daylight.

Is this suitable for office wear?
