A lilac handloom mul cotton saree with a pallu full of flowers. Lotuses open across it in shaded blue, plum and peach thread, on golden stems with small green leaves. Below them, rows of Kantha running stitch in maroon, blue, purple and teal run down to the tasselled end, with small sequins caught between the stitches.

The body stays quiet: soft lilac, with little embroidered leaf buttis scattered across it and a line of Kantha stitch following the border.

Handloom mul, embroidered by hand

Mul, or mulmul, is a fine, soft cotton, light enough to wear through a long, warm day. This one is handwoven. The lotuses and the Kantha stitching are handwork too, so nothing here is machine-even. A Kantha row may wander a little. One petal may sit a shade fuller than its neighbour. That is how you know a person made it.

How to style it

Choose your blouse from the embroidery itself. Deep plum or peacock blue pulls out the lotuses; olive green picks up the leaves. The pallu already carries plenty of colour, so keep the blouse solid and the jewellery light, and let the lotuses be the one statement.

When to wear it

The colour and sequins make it well-suited to festive days: Navratri and Golu evenings, Deepavali (cotton is our usual pick for it), a sabha, a housewarming or a small family function. It also makes a thoughtful gift for a mother or sister who loves handwork.

Care

Dry clean the first time. After that, a gentle hand wash in cold water with mild detergent is fine. Wash it on its own, don't brush or wring the embroidery, and line dry in the shade. Iron warm, from the reverse side, and never press directly on the sequins. Store it folded in a soft cotton cloth.
