The Grey & Maroon Khadi Cotton Saree puts a soft grey body against a deep maroon pallu, with a maroon running blouse attached. Grey is rare in Indian cotton and it is worth more attention than it gets โ€” it makes maroon look richer than a traditional cream or gold ground ever would.

Is this handloom?

No. This one is powerloom-woven, mill-spun cotton in a khadi weave.

We say that plainly because you shouldn't have to guess. About 80% of our range is handmade by skilled artisans and labelled as such โ€” this saree isn't part of that group. It is khadi-weave cotton woven on a powerloom, which is precisely why it sits at โ‚น1,200 rather than three times that. The comfort and the drape are unchanged. Only the making is different.

How to tell them apart: handloom cotton shows small irregularities โ€” thread density that shifts slightly, an imperfect selvedge, the occasional knot. Powerloom cloth is even throughout. Neither is a fault.

Fabric and drape

Khadi-weave cotton, light and breathable, with a subtle texture rather than a flat finish. It holds a pleat well and grows softer with each wash.

Styling grey and maroon

Grey is a neutral, which makes this one of the more versatile sarees in the range โ€” it takes almost any blouse you put with it.

  • The attached maroon running blouse is the classic choice and needs no thought.
  • For something less expected, a black, mustard or bottle-green blouse all work against grey. A printed or ikat blouse especially โ€” a plain saree with a plain blouse tends to fall flat.
  • Both silver and gold sit well here, which is unusual. Oxidised silver leans contemporary; temple gold leans traditional.
  • Grey with a maroon border lifts deeper and dusky skin beautifully, and the contrast keeps it from washing out on fairer skin.

When to wear it

Office wear ยท daily wear ยท temple visits ยท small family functions ยท Dussehra and Deepavali, where cotton is safer around lamps than silk ยท year-round in South Indian weather.

Measurements and what's included

Care

Hand wash or machine wash in cold to lukewarm water with a mild detergent. No bleach or harsh chemicals. Wash the first few times on its own โ€” maroon releases dye early and grey shows it. Don't wring or twist. Line dry in the shade. Warm iron only. Store dry, wrapped in white cotton cloth. Small knots in cotton are natural. With proper care the saree lasts 7 to 10 years.

Questions buyers ask

Is this saree handloom?

No โ€” powerloom. It is mill-woven khadi-weave cotton, not handwoven. Roughly 80% of our wider range is artisan-made; this is our accessible everyday piece.

How long is the saree?

6 metres, including an 80 cm running blouse. Width 1.2 metres.

Is the blouse included and is it stitched?

A maroon running blouse comes attached, matching the pallu. It is unstitched โ€” take it to your tailor for your own fit.

Is grey a good colour for a saree?

Grey is one of the most versatile grounds you can own. It takes almost any blouse colour, works for office and for functions, and makes a maroon pallu look far richer than cream would.

What blouse should I pair with it?

The attached maroon is the easy answer. Black, mustard or bottle green all work too, and a printed or ikat blouse gives the drape more life than another plain one.

Gold or silver jewellery with this?

Both work, which is rare. Oxidised silver reads modern; temple gold reads traditional. Pick one substantial piece rather than several small ones.

Will the maroon run onto the grey?

Wash it separately for the first two or three washes. Deep maroons release some dye at first and a grey ground shows it more than a dark one would.

Will it shrink?

A little, on the first wash. Cold to lukewarm water and shade drying keep it minimal.

What are your returns and exchanges?

5 days from receipt to request a return, with an unedited parcel-opening video. Exchanges within 3 days, original condition and packaging. We don't offer pickup, so return shipping is yours to arrange and pay for.
