A grey saree with a red temple border and a striped grey-and-red pallu, woven on a powerloom in West Bengal. The body is plain grey, softly flecked with darker threads. The colour comes in at the edges. Red temple triangles line the border, and the pallu is banded with fine red stripes and red jamdani-style motifs in zigzag chains. It is 6 metres long, including a running blouse.

We say handloom or powerloom on every saree we list. This one is powerloom. The motifs are woven in by the loom, not inlaid by hand, which is why we call them jamdani-style.

Fabric & Weave

The fabric is sold in the trade as soft Dhakai jamdani. It is light and soft to wear. The style comes from the jamdani tradition of Dhaka, and the saree itself was woven in West Bengal, India.

How to Style It

Grey and red is quiet and sharp at once. It is an easy saree for the office, a sabha or a weekday temple visit, and it steps up for an evening function with the right jewellery. A red blouse picks up the border and pallu. A black blouse makes it more formal. Oxidised silver jewellery sits beautifully against the grey. Gold works too, if you want it warmer for Deepavali.

Care Instructions

Hand wash gently in cold water with a mild detergent, or dry clean. No bleach or harsh chemicals. Wash it separately the first time, as the red is strong against the grey. Do not wring or twist. Line dry in the shade. Iron on a warm setting, never hot. Store folded in a white cotton cloth in a dry place.
