A cream saree with a black temple border and a charcoal pallu, woven on a powerloom in West Bengal. This is the monochrome one in the series. The cream body is plain and soft, the border is sharp black, and the pallu turns dark charcoal with black jamdani-style motifs stepping across it in zigzag chains. It is 6 metres long, including a running blouse.

We state handloom or powerloom on every saree. This one is powerloom. The black motifs are woven by the loom, not inlaid by hand, so we call them jamdani-style.

Fabric & Weave

The fabric is sold in the trade as soft Dhakai jamdani. It is light and soft, with a gentle sheen on the cream body. The style comes from the jamdani tradition of Dhaka. This saree was woven in West Bengal, India.

  • Body: plain cream with a soft sheen
  • Border: black temple triangles on a band of fine black and grey stripes
  • Pallu: charcoal, with black jamdani-style zigzag motifs
  • Running blouse: included, with the temple border along one edge

  • Woven: on a powerloom in West Bengal, India

How to Style It

Cream and black is clean, graphic and grown-up. It is at home at the office, a classical music sabha, a gallery opening or an evening event. A black blouse keeps it strictly monochrome. A red or deep maroon blouse gives it one bold note of colour. Oxidised silver jewellery and a black bindi suit it perfectly. For a festive evening, a gold choker changes the mood entirely.

Care Instructions

Hand wash gently in cold water with a mild detergent, or dry clean. No bleach or harsh chemicals. Wash it on its own the first time, so the black and charcoal stay off the cream. Do not wring or twist. Line dry in the shade. Iron on a warm setting, never hot. Store folded in a white cotton cloth in a dry place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Cream Jamdani-Style Saree handloom?

No. The Cream Jamdani-Style Saree is woven on a powerloom in West Bengal. The black motifs on its charcoal pallu are woven by the loom, not inlaid by hand. We label every saree as handloom or powerloom.

What is the fabric of this cream and black saree?

It is sold in the trade as soft Dhakai jamdani fabric. It is light and soft, with a gentle sheen on the cream body.

Is this saree made in Bangladesh?

No. The jamdani style comes from Dhaka, but this saree was woven in West Bengal, India. That is why we call it Dhakai-style.

Is there a blouse with the Cream Jamdani-Style Saree?

Yes. It comes with a running blouse, with the temple border along one edge, as part of the 6 metre length.

What are the length and width?

It is 6 metres long and 1.2 metres wide, including the blouse piece. It is free size.

Where would I wear a cream and black saree?

It suits the office, a classical music sabha, a cultural event or an evening function. With gold jewellery it also works for a festive evening.

What blouse suits a cream saree with a black border?

A black blouse keeps it monochrome. A red or deep maroon blouse adds a single bold colour. A plain cream blouse would make the look flat, so we suggest a contrast.

How do I wash the Cream Jamdani-Style Saree?

Hand wash gently in cold water with a mild detergent, or dry clean. Wash it on its own the first time, avoid bleach, do not wring, line dry in the shade and iron on a warm setting.

Is the cream shade accurate in the photo?

We photograph every saree as close to its real colour as we can. Lighting and screen settings can still cause small differences.
