Bright yellow handloom mul cotton, with a pallu that grows upward. Flowering stems stand in a row across it — white clustered blooms on dark green stalks, pink and lilac buds, blue leaves opening along fine stems. They rise out of a wide band of Kantha running stitch worked in black, white, rust and green, with small sequins caught between the rows. The pallu ends in yellow tassels.

The body is left open, with single embroidered leaf buttas in blue and pink spaced well apart. That is deliberate. Yellow this clear does not want crowding, and it keeps the weight of the work where it belongs, on the pallu.

Handloom mul, worked by hand

Mul, also called mulmul, is a fine soft cotton — the sort you can wear from a morning pooja through to an afternoon lunch without ever thinking about it. This length is handwoven. The flowering stems and the Kantha bands are hand embroidery, stitch by stitch, which is why the rows breathe in and out a little and no two stems match. Machines do not make that. People do.

How to style it

Bright yellow is happiest with one strong partner, not three. A bottle green blouse is the classic answer and never fails. Deep pink turns it festive; plain white or off-white keeps it calm enough for daytime. Oxidised silver or temple gold suits it better than fine polished gold, and a single strand of black beads looks wonderful against this shade.

When to wear it

This is a daylight saree. Haldi mornings, Varamahalakshmi and Ugadi, Pongal, a temple visit, a housewarming, a sabha in the afternoon. Yellow is also one of the easiest colours to gift — it suits almost everyone, and it reads as celebration without anyone having to explain it.

Care

Dry clean it the first time. After that, hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent, on its own — bright yellow bleeds into other fabrics on a first few washes. Store folded in a soft cotton cloth.
