A black Kanchipuram cotton saree, woven on a handloom in 100% cotton. The body is a deep, plain black, crossed by fine bands of gold thread near the pallu. A wide gold thread border runs along the edge, woven with round coin motifs and wave lines in the temple style Kanchipuram is known for. The pallu ends in red and black pom-pom tassels.
Black and gold, nothing more. It has the quiet confidence of a saree that doesn't need to try.
Fabric & Weave
- Weave: Kanchipuram cotton, handloom
- Fabric: 100% cotton
- Border: woven in golden thread (not zari)
- Length: 6.4 metres, including a running blouse
- Width: 1.2 metres
- Size: free size
Because it's handwoven, you may notice small variations in the weave. These are the marks of a loom worked by hand, not flaws.
How to Style It
Black and red is one of the oldest pairings there is. A red blouse picks up the tassels and turns this into an evening saree. For a softer look, try a pastel or an Ajrakh block-print blouse and let the gold border carry the occasion. Gold or temple jewellery suits it; one statement piece is enough.
Lovely for Deepavali evenings (cotton is a calm choice around diyas), music and dance sabhas, office days, temple visits and family functions.
Care Instructions
- Hand wash or machine wash in cold to lukewarm water with a mild detergent
- No bleach or harsh chemicals
- Wash separately from light colours
- Do not wring or twist
- Line dry in shade to keep the black deep
- Iron on a warm setting, never hot
- Store folded in a dry place, wrapped in a white cotton cloth
Cared for this way, a cotton handloom saree stays with you for 7 to 10 years.
FAQs
Is this a handloom saree?
Yes. This Kanchipuram cotton saree is woven on a handloom. We label every saree we sell as handloom or powerloom, so you always know what you're buying.
What is the fabric?
It is 100% cotton.
Is the border real zari?
No. The border is woven in golden thread, not zari. We'd rather tell you plainly.
Does it come with a blouse piece?
Yes. It comes with a running blouse, included in the 6.4 metre length.
What are the length and width?
The saree is 6.4 metres long, including the running blouse, and 1.2 metres wide.
Will the colour look the same as in the photos?
We photograph every saree in natural light, but slight colour differences can happen because of lighting and screen settings.
Will it shrink?
Cotton can shrink slightly. Washing in cold to lukewarm water and line drying in shade helps it keep its shape.
Is a black saree right for a festival?
That depends on your family's customs. Many women wear black and gold for Deepavali evenings, sabhas and parties; some families prefer to avoid black for poojas. Paired with a red blouse, it reads festive.
