Black Handloom Mul Cotton Saree with White Embroidery and Mirror Work

A black handloom mul cotton saree, worked all over in white thread embroidery with small mirrors set into the flowers.

The body carries scattered floral buttas with room to breathe between them. Towards the pallu the work grows denser — bands of flowering vines laid one above the other, until the whole end of the drape is covered in white. Black cotton tassels finish the pallu edge.

An honest note on the embroidery. The thread work and the mirror work on this saree are machine-embroidered, not hand-embroidered. The mul cotton base is handloom.

How to style it

Black and white asks for very little help. The saree is already doing the talking, so let the blouse stay quiet — a plain black, a soft white, or one clear jewel tone like deep maroon, emerald or mustard if you want the contrast.

Oxidised silver or pearl sits beautifully against white embroidery. Keep the jewellery to one statement piece rather than several.

It works for evening functions, sabha and cultural events, temple visits, and festive days when you want something striking without weight. Mul cotton stays comfortable through a long day.

Care

Dry clean is what I recommend for this saree — dense embroidery and mirror work last longer that way.

If you would rather wash it at home: cold water, mild detergent, no brush on the embroidery. Do not wring or twist. Line dry in the shade and use a warm iron, never hot, and iron on the reverse over the embroidered areas.

Wash it separately for the first few washes. I do not make colourfastness promises I cannot verify batch by batch, and a deep black with white work deserves that caution.

The mul cotton base is handloom. The embroidery on top of it is machine work. Both facts are true of the same saree, and I would rather you have both.

Is the embroidery hand-done or machine-done?

Machine-done. The white thread work and the mirror placement are machine embroidery. It is neat, dense and even, and it is not hand embroidery — I do not sell one as the other.

Does it come with a blouse piece?

No. This is a 5 metre saree without a blouse piece. You will need to source blouse fabric separately.

How long is the saree?

What is mul cotton?

Mul, or mulmul, is a fine, soft, lightly woven cotton. It is light against the skin, breathes well in South Indian heat, and softens further with every wash.

Is there real mirror work on it?

Yes. Small mirrors are set into the centres of the embroidered flowers, machine-fixed along with the thread work.

How should I wash this saree?

Dry clean is what I recommend. If you wash it at home, use cold water and a mild detergent, never a brush on the embroidery, no wringing, line dry in shade and iron warm on the reverse.

Will the black colour run in the first wash?

We cannot promise it will not, because colourfastness varies batch to batch and I only claim what I have verified. Wash it separately the first few times and use cold water.

Plain black or plain white both work and let the embroidery lead. If you want contrast, one clear jewel tone — deep maroon, emerald, mustard — lifts the whole drape.
